Vanessa and Bryant kept it small on purpose. A courthouse ceremony, a handful of people, and an afternoon in one of the most quietly beautiful locations on the California coast.
That kind of day asks for a photographer who knows how to stay out of the way and step in exactly when it matters.
The Light
Overcast afternoons at the Santa Barbara Courthouse do something specific. The light goes flat in the best possible way. Soft, even, no harsh shadows, no midday squinting. Every portrait from start to finish had the same quality. Nothing was rushed because nothing had to be.
The Ceremony
The Sunken Garden. An officiant, a few close people, two people who were clearly ready. The whole thing was short and personal and exactly right.
The Portraits
After the ceremony we moved through the grounds, through the arched corridors, the loggia, the garden perimeter. Vanessa in an off-shoulder white dress, Bryant in black. The courthouse gave us the backdrop and they gave us the rest.
By the end: sunglasses on, laughing, Vanessa mid-dip. That’s always where I want a session to land. The point where the couple forgets they’re being photographed and just becomes themselves.
If You’re Planning a Courthouse Wedding
Build portrait time into your schedule after the ceremony. The grounds have real variety and there’s no reason to leave before you’ve used them. Arrive early, know the sequence, and have a plan for where you’re going.
That’s what I come in with every time.
I photograph courthouse weddings and elopements throughout California’s Central Coast, from San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara. If you want calm direction and photos worth keeping, reach out.
